The area was originally called Edgefield by the first developers, R. E. Bateman and John W. “Jack” Brown. Even though the single-family homes that were built in the late 1950s were on the edge of farm fields, residents sought a more tropical name. Since the main attraction of the development was water skiing shows along the canal or creeks that were landscaped with coconut palms, the name Coconut Creek was coined.
