This site on the Peace River was at first the location of Fort Clinch, established in 1849, but the fortification was not maintained. Some three years later during a topographical survey of the area, the commanding officer of the party assigned to Second Lieutenant George G. Meade was given the task of finding the site of old Fort Clinch. This was not easy due to the ambiguous description he had been given, but before nightfall he had found it. General Twigg, the commanding officer, exclaimed, “Here shall be Fort Meade!”
