Miss T.M. Tilton established the town in 1882. She owned the hotel and served as postmaster. The name was prompted by its nearness to the St. Mary’s River, which forms the northern boundary of Florida. St. Mary’s is easier to pronounce than the Indian name for the town that was Thlathlakuphka.
