There seem to have been two men by the name of Jennings who may have contributed the name of this town. Robert Jennings settled here in 1860, operating a farm and a general store. A George Jennings came to this vicinity in 1884 on a raft by way of the Alapaha River. This was an important shipping point for Sea Island cotton in the days before World War I and the boll weevil.
