One version suggests that Lee was named after the first railroad supervisor, Jim Lee, for whom the depot was named. Another story is that Lee was named after General Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief of the Confederate armed forces during the Civil War, who visited here. The post office was opened in 1882 and John Haven then chose the name. Philip Newland had established a limekiln at the town.
