Safety Harbor, home of the Espiritu Santo Mineral Springs, is the oldest settlement on the Pinellas Peninsula. Dr. Odet Phillipi settled it in 1823 as Espiritu Santo (Holy Spirit). Later, it was called Green Springs, and finally incorporated as Safety Harbor, with a population of 200. The name indicated that it was a shelter for seamen and vessels. Espiritu Santo water was world famous when the city was incorporated. It was named after Hernando DeSoto’s own expression upon first seeing the Safety Harbor Coast. The explorer exclaimed, “Here in truth man may find the Holy Spirit.”
