Virginia Gardens was originally part of neighboring Miami Springs. Many early residents of the area had horses and, when Miami Springs decided to prohibit the keeping of horses on private property, the residents decided to form their own town. It was not an uncommon sight in the 1950s to see horses and cows wandering about the town. Today, Virginia Gardens no longer has any horses or cows, but it still is a quaint village in the midst of urbanized Dade County.
