Putnam County

Year Founded: 1887

The town’s name comes from a combination of Indian words meaning, “tide” or “intermittent springs.” The town is on the St. Johns River, which the Seminoles called Ylaco or Walaka. Another interpretation given the word is “river of lakes,” which is most applicable to the St. Johns.
