A campaign commemorating Florida's diverse cities.
Brought to you by the Florida League of Cities.
In 1875, Williston was named to honor Jesse Mercer Willis, who settled the area in 1853. His plantation was located in the present city limits of Williston. The first post office was established and located in one room of the Willis home. The first free school was built and the school’s only teacher was paid $20 per month. In 1906, Williston had the largest school system in Levy County (total enrollment was 120 pupils). Originally incorporated as a “town,” Williston was re-incorporated in 1929 as a “city.”
